Overview
The Bachama are an ethnic group indigenous to the Numan area of Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria. They are known for their warm and welcoming nature, as well as their long history of fierce warrior traditions. The Bachama people have a strong Christian faith, with the majority of the population identifying as Christians.
Location and Settlements
- Numan is considered the Administrative headquarters while Lamurde the traditional capital of the Bachama people.
- However, the Bachama occupy several other towns and villages across different local government areas in Adamawa State.
- Some of the other major Bachama settlements include Demsa, Lamurde, Girei, Song, Mayo-Belwa, Fufore and some parts of Cameroon. More detail of this will be captured in the Bachama History.
Economic activity.
Agriculture is the backbone of the Bachama economy. They are skilled farmers, cultivating a variety of crops such as Guinea corn, Maize, Beans, cassava, rice, and vegetables etc. The Bachama also engage in fishing, taking advantage of the many rivers and streams in their region.
In addition to farming and fishing, the Bachama are known for their pastoralist practices and cattle rearing. They maintain herds of cattle that are an important part of their cultural and economic identity.
It is also worth mentioning that, the Bachama (Bwatiye) people are not used to business not until recently due to mingling with other tribes and other factors. Now we have a lot of them who are great business men and women with a lot of investments across the country.
Culture and Traditions
- The Bachama have a rich cultural heritage, with their own distinct language, customs, and traditional practices.
- They are known for their bravery and warrior-like qualities, which have played a role in their history. Suffice it to say that, even in the military today, the story cannot be complete without mentioning the Bachama (Bwatiye) considering the important role they played to ensure the country Nigeria remains one entity. Not also forgetting the roles they played in ECOMOG and other military exercises in other countries of the world which earned them great respect and recognition.
